2nd May 2006

Following on from yesterday's, "Ye Compleat Windde Warrior" photo, the following correspondence courtesy of D.J.E. has been received from America : -

(1)     " ... and the fellow sporting the propeller beanie on his head is anti-wind power campaigner Dick xxxxxxx. (In case you're wondering, that is not a 1.5MW on Dick's beanie, but it does deliver the same amount of juice as a 1.5MW windmill. That is, the efficiencies are identical.)"

(2)     Written by a visitor to Tug Hill mega-windplant: -
" ... it is worse than I imagined. I truly wanted to cry when I saw them. They are absolutely EVERYWHERE and just plopped wherever! And when those wind turbine people say they don't make noise....THEY MAKE NOISE...LOTS OF IT. We were lucky that we were there on a windy day. I could not imagine living the way these people are forced to live. We also saw many of the workers at this house they congregate at. All beautiful trucks and ALL out of state license plates... so much for Tug Hill people getting any jobs out of the deal! The place is still a mess, too. NOTHING has been cleaned up. It is an absolute crime!!!!"

(3)     Calvin added: -
" ... I have always maintained the wind sharks carry a special license in their wallets. Next time you see your friendly wind shark at your town meeting, go ahead: ask to see his Non-Veracity License (NVL). He'll whip it out; they're proud of them. It's got his picture, and it's stamped by the New York Secretary of State, and it says the carrier of this license has permission from the State of New York to lie at will, with impunity. Yeah, they pay 50 bucks for these things. Come in handy."

Ensuring our common future

Caption reads: - "RULE CHANGE   Under the new legislation, common land will be managed by statutory associations, with powers to regulate grazing and other agricultural activities.

N.B. - To all supporters of SOCME; RAG; TAG; BMPG, and all protest groups threatened by wind power developments on common land : -
Please make special note of the words of UK Environment Minister Elliot Morley and make good use of them.

He describes commons as.... "fundamental to the character of our countryside" and a "reservoir of biodiversity".

Under new legislation, common land will be managed by statutory associations, with powers to regulate grazing and other agricultural activities.
(I personally don't believe that giant commercial wind turbines erected on common land can be classified as agricultural activies.)

The article then states... "The Bill reinforces existing protections against abuse, encroachment and unauthorised development, and safeguards public access."

Heed these words my friends and memorise them to heart, to ram down the throats of the likes of Andrew Davies AM and Carwyn Jones AM.

This is a red letter day for those of us who cherish our common land heritage and its scenic beauty.

We must never fail to emphasis, in the strongest possible terms, the words of the UK Environment Minister in any exchanges that we might have with wind power developers, or pro-wind power supporters.

Granted they do produce fossil fuel electricity elsewhere, but at their presentation in Felindre, Swansea, they were adamant that they wanted the wind turbines to save the world from climate change, but admitted reluctantly that they wouldn't even entertain the project if it wasn't for hefty subsidies.

I realise that it isn't April 1st today, but between nuclear power and climate change and wind power and now icebergs being suggested to be towed up the Thames, it does appear that the UK is in one hell of a mess.
The 'Greens' should have a field day on this iceberg story -- Icebergs hijacked by the UK.!!
Unfortunately it appears that with the 'powers to be' that we have in control in the UK government and in the boardrooms of industry; there might well be some truth in this?
Anyone for a lollipop?
Just slip over to the Thames iceberg and serve yourself; but don't forget to take along your own stick!

Among other interesting articles in this 24 page BWEA publication, there is on page 23 an article entitled,
"Technical Spotlight - Grid Code Compliance - Voltage Aspects"
which states, "Changes in both the Irish and GB Grid Code in 2005 have brought additional technical requirements for wind parks, which include reactive power and voltage control. These particular requirements have brought about a fair amount of concern and frustration to wind farm developers. etc. etc.....
Page 7 of this publication gives the latest statistics of wind farms in the UK.

This next item is the history of the growth of a typical quango in Wales, which started out in life with very laudable ideals but sadly decayed into a money-grabbing quango, feeding off the mad wind-rush gravy train.

Many thanks to M.B. for the above web link.

G.P. van den Berg's PhD thesis dissertation is now published on the web site of the University of Groningen, Netherlands.

It would seem that G.P. van den Berg is the only scientist, and with the necessary qualifications, who has actually done the hard yards and gone and meticulously measured wind turbine noise, day and night continuously, over a period of many months.

The turbines are the modern, tall, variable-speed variety, of the supposedly quiet, state-of-the-art kind.
The thesis details his exhaustive study of the noise emanating from a windfarm on the Dutch/German border. It contains a description of his method of investigation, and his understanding of the meteorological phenomena which affect sound propagation.
The day/night differences in these phenomena often mean that there are major differences between day and night propagation distances of wind turbine noise, and the character of the noise as perceived by the hearer.
For those of us who don't claim a scientific background, do not be put off by the fact that it is a scientific thesis. It is relatively easy to read.
For those having access only to narrow-band dial-up Internet connections, please note that it is a large download - so it will take a while to download.

The thesis can be downloaded as a complete version .PDF file (4.4Mbytes) or in separate chapters varying from 80.7Kbytes to 965Kbytes .PDF files.   Wind Turbine Noise Dissertation   (web link)

Thanks for the Ferndale Arts Factory Gen..........showed a very gullible reaction from the local community with the usual blatant misinformation and attempt at bribery by United Utilities.
The attachment shows the history but the later exclusion of the Rhondda from TAN 8 ..........as per above Leighton Andrews ( Rhondda AM )website link...........appears to be a direct result of CCW, CADW and others applying the pressure..............shows that strings can be pulled if willpower and common sense prevail.
The "old town" almost looks the same. The high ground in the pic is known locally as BRISTOL TUMP...............you can see the Bristol Channel from there on a rare clear day.
Re Scarweather.........the protection of harbour porpoises and the escalating costs of offshore windfarm development are grounds for optimism but the fight continues.
Best regards
David"
