If the above 'Economist' and BBC News reports are correct( and there's normally - 'no smoke without fire') and if this little lot should come to fruition with the very real possibility of a return to the 'Cold War' and 'Arms-Race' era, Methinks that wind turbines; the Welsh Assembly Government's politicians' and climate change will become the very least of our worries.

This could turn out to be the opening chapter of Bush and Blair's, "Weapons Of Mass Destruction" Part II.

Wind turbine sccident sparks widespread safety talk: Japan -- Japanese officials are investigating the safety of foreign-made wind turbines began after a recent accident in Higashidorimura. A 223-foot generator on the wind farm in the Aomori Prefecture fell when the concrete base cracked, The Daily Yomiuri reported. The steel rods that were meant to support it and secure it to the base were left. Officials said the reason for the crash was still unknown but it was not likely the fall was caused by strong winds. It's designed to hold up in winds up to 134 mph, which is a high-rise building standard applied to wind turbines.     (article - web link)

Stocks: Investors cash out of alternative energy     (article - web link)

The above article which includes phrases such as ," global warming is "a bubble" and "social short-term craze," together with yesterday's report in the Sunday Observer about 'investors' growing lack of confidence in renewable energy projects, would appear to indicate that wind power developers won't be able to raise finances so easily for their projects. Both reports also appear to concur with what many of us have been saying for years, that... "Wind power might well lead to a 'carbon-copy' of the disastrous "South Sea Bubble" stock market crash.
Or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

"He says 3% of UK energy could be provided if we turned 9% of the farmland over to Miscanthus or coppice Willow. *

Do we all eat 9% less?

Or more likely do we import the shortfall of food/dairy product in which case how much of the saving would be balanced by transport fuel?
He also notes in the article that because of the low energy content of the biomass it has to be burned close to the 'field' - to reduce transport loss. "
