That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of ugly wind turbines; Along the ridge, against the sky, Restlessly flailing in the breeze. An insult to the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in tortured dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Were overshadowed by the blight A poet could never be gay, In such a gloomy company: I gazed - and gazed - and sadly thought What despair the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the curse of solitude; And then my heart with anger fills, And mourns the loss of distant views. These ugly monsters sear my heart Assail my sight, offend my ear Tear at my peaceful solitude Where now can I refresh my soul Now that hills are factories And open spaces gone to hell. With apologies to Wordsworth: Jenny Keal |
